March 10, 2009 // Family / The Loft
Moms and Dads bring their kids to me to capture those sweet moments and what usually matters most to them is that I capture THEIR KIDS. They typically don't worry so much about being in front of the camera themselves. I encourage parents to get in front of the camera because

1.  it's important for their children to have keepsake images of the family- the whole of them. I truly enjoy capturing the moments between parent and child.

2. I love to photograph Moms, because I find that rarely do they see how beautiful they really are. I feel like they need to know, and that I should show them!

So this is for N., a Mom whose family I photographed last year. She brought the whole crew to The Loft this week and we had a blast. We'll be adding their images to a new section of Loft images on the website this week. I wanted to post this one for now, because N., your spirit is sooooo bright, and I just love having you in front of the camera!

Best,
Ann

March 1, 2009 // The Loft
I've been photographing Ms. A every year since she was a baby and she'll be 5 next month! The cool thing about photographing a child repeatedly over the years, is that I'm able to capture the unique look and spirit of each stage! I was in awe while proofing these, because I just kept thinking.. she looks so old! Wasn't I just photographing her crawling!?!?!?!?

During the shoot, I asked her. "A., you're doing such a great job!, who taught you how to do this!?" and she replied so matter-of-factly "You did!"  HA HA! We had a blast. Thanks to my dear friend K. for being just that, and cheers to A. for a shoot well done!

Video make take a minute or two to load...

February 25, 2009 // Thoughts
Truly, there just aren't.  If only I had a team of about 100 people to follow me around, fixing the things I break, taking on the new projects my mind wonders up, building the many things I think I need, on and on, well then, life might be perfect :)

Things have been so busy lately that in some ways it seems like one big blur, but at least it's been a fun blur- a whirlwind of good photographic activity- full of things I LIKE TO DO. With the opening of The Loft, it's been a really exciting time. Our On-Location calendar is starting to get busy for the year, and we're looking forward to adding The Loft to the schedule in March. Images coming soon!

I'm writing this post tonight, because I wanted to share some of these recent images with you. It's different from the work you'll see on the website, but it's part of a series I've been working on over the past few years. It's been exhibited in a few galleries and the collection of images continues to grow. There are a few rules that I've set for myself while creating these images. I'm not big on rules, so I've keep them simple while keeping it challenging. The story is this. I seem to travel a good bit for work, and I've always been the type of person that gets lost on the road. Not literally, but figuratively... lost in my head. It's often a dangerous place to be, but for now, we'll just say it's a VERY BUSY place.

One of the things I like about living in the midwest, is that driving offers plenty of visual curiosity. I say curiosity because it's the farm houses with barns and such that have fascinated me since I was a young child. I've always been a people person, and the thing is, I never see any people around these off-the-side-seemingly-in-the-middle-of-nowhere homes. I wonder what their story is. Everyone has a story.

So, I have my own stories about what I think life is like at these homes. What I think isn't that important really, it's just that I've captured it, and acknowledged that it's there... that they're there.

Oh yeah, the rules... must be riding passenger side with seat belt on, car can not stop, must be shot while driving by on highway. In other words, I'm either lost in my head, or deep in conversation with hubby, or listening to "are we there yet" by three little ones in the backseat. I look up, and suddenly I see it, shoot it, and wonder about whether I "got it" or not.

Here you go... a few from our recent trip to Pittsburgh.

Ann, these are absolutely breathtaking. simply beautiful artwork. they should be in a permanent gallery.
and then to find out they were taken in a moving vehicle.. WOW.. you impress me everytime I see your work.

(02.25.09 @ 10:15 PM)
Ann:

That makes me happy! Thanks guys. I'm really loving working on this series. Yeah, the funny thing is that most of them are shot while traveling full speed on the highway, with only a second, if that, to shoot. That's why I sit there and wonder if I got the shot :)

Remember, I'm on the passenger side.. not driving!
