It's a warm, welcoming place filled with support, educational resources and friendly faces. The story behind the entire process of creating this series is one I hope to feature some day, as it's meaning is something I have yet to entirely wrap my mind around. It was a moving experience and one that I thank God for. I'm grateful for Donna Williamson whose idea, support and push around this project made it possible, and to Anthony Andello and Mary Shields for their support and warm welcome.

A few details: The images were photographed in the Center's amazing gardens. Some of the flowers were donated last summer by friend Kristy Lopez. After shooting in the garden, the images were then partially painted in my digital darkroom.

In memory...

One of the biggest blessings in my life this year was the friendship I found in Kristy Lopez. I write tonight, heartbroken to have lost such a loving soul in my life.

it seems somewhat trivial to put into words what Kristy had come to mean to me on my blog. Kristy meant so many things to so many people. She was the kind of person that made you feel good about yourself. She greeted you with a smile and a general enthusiasm. She was loving, compassionate , thoughtful, giving and kind. She dreamed big, and that too was only one of the many things I loved about her.

I'm posting this tonight, because I know a good few of you that wanted to see the images from last weekend's photoshoot. Kristy and Rina (and Lucy) came to the Loft. It was the first of what I had hoped to be many more. As owner of Monarch Giving, and the uber talent behind Monarch's floral arrangements, Kristy brought a few flowers which we incorporated into the shoot. Lucy, her enthusiastic side-kick, also joined in.

This video is for you Kristy- I wish more than anything you could have seen these images- and what hopefully reflects what a beautiful person you were inside and out.

The quote at the beginning, along with the music were among her favorites. My thoughts and prayers go out to the many people whose lives this bright soul touched.

May take a minute to load...

Yeah, this is the kinda stuff....

that's gets me jazzed. I'm sitting at my desk, waiting for disks to burn and an hour to pass before my next appointment. No, that's not the exciting part- it's everything that's going on around me that I'm over elated about. My better half just left with the moving truck and all the things I've been collecting for the additional space at The Loft are on their way! It's official- our Loft space has more than doubled :) I'm so excited about this on so many levels. It's finally a space that I think can handle all that I need. That's saying a lot. Secondly, it's like finding a home you know you're destined to live in- a space that just says "you". I'm surrounded by an amazing community and one that I'm proud to be a part of.

I also have to admit, I've always been spoiled when it's come to studio space. My first real studio was in undergraduate at Tyler,. My second was in Rome overlooking the Tiber river. Third came my space at The Art Institute, on Michigan Ave., overlooking the lake. While these were all amazing spaces, they were still mine as a student.

As an artist, I've always wondered what kind of space I'd finally end up in. What would it look like? Where would it be. I've had visions of it- just didn't know where it was. Over the past ten years, I've worked in some additionally wonderful spaces, yet finally I feel like I've found my artistic home where I can play- have fun- and welcome anyone that wants to have fun too.

So, dear readers, cheers to today and cheers to all good things to come-

Ann

Experience the fine art....

I was thinking yesterday about why someone should invest in good photography- and not just good photography, but my photography. If I needed a sales pitch what would it be? Do I need a sales pitch?

When I was in graduate school, I took a class regarding the aspect of selling of art. We read about "marketing" and how to present ourselves in the real world where the practice of purchasing art isn't an every day practice.

In thinking about why someone should invest in the fine art of modern portraiture, I kept thinking about those credit card commercials- you know the ones, where they say "Sunglasses: $19.99; 5 towels, 5 swimsuits $199.00; A trip to the Bahamas with your entire family: PRICELESS!"

That one word: Priceless. Priceless. I couldn't get it out of my head. People ask me all the time if I have a ton of images of my own children hanging around my house and the answer is yes, I do. There's one image in fact, that always comes to mind when people ask me that. I may have even blogged about it before. It's an image that was made a few weeks after my first son was born. He was very colicky/had reflux and cried A LOT. I set up the shot so that my husband and I were on each side of him and -baby crying and all- we kissed him- loved him with all our hearts and click, the shutter snapped.

You guessed it: PRICELESS.

With that in mind, I don't know how to better express what photography means to me. If I've photographed you before, then I'm guessing you know I'm passionate about what I do and I hope that your images grace the walls of your home and that they are as priceless to you as they are to me.

Having three boys of my own, I find it difficult to capture ALL of the moments, but I do capture many of them. In fact, the next post will have to be about that- because as a family, we just had our photograph taken, and it was an experience to remember!

I have more thoughts on this subject and will blog soon. It's busy season and the juggling has begun. I love it though, and despite the new growth of gray hair, it keeps me young :)

Cheers!

Ann

Smoky Mountains...

A friend called me this morning and gave me the riot act for not posting on the blog more often. I like posting, and always have the best intentions, but there never seems to be enough time! Life is moving at warp speed and I'm a happy passenger trying to move along with it!

It's been an amazing summer. We spent a few weeks away- time traveling between Chicago and the Smoky Mountains. I spent some time creating images of my own- random things that caught my eye while away and as always photographed my own children more than they might prefer. I can honestly say it was the greatest vacation I've ever taken. Who knew that all it would take was a cabin in the woods to make me so happy? Don't get me wrong, I don't do bugs or "roughing it" well, and we had none of either, it was just SO Quiet. Even with three boys, it was a real vacation.

I returned feeling so renewed and ready to hit busy season which started this week. We're also expanding our Loft space to double it's size and I'm OVER THE MOON excited about it! I think this move will require many hours spent at the Mart shopping for the perfect finds. Yes, lots of shopping will be required :)

We're currently booking into late September (with exception to Newborns). Thinking about those Holiday Cards? Don't wait, call us and book your session. I'm delighted to be able to photograph so many wonderful and amazing families. I count my blessings daily.

I wanted to post the images above for S... you know that was a blast of a session!

Best,
Ann

These two angels have grown so much since I photographed them last and best of all they'll be gaining a sibling soon! I'm truly blessed to be able to watch my families grow and to witness the magic of it all! Thanks M. for being you and I can't wait to meet and photograph the new addition..... and of course, your two English Bulldogs!!!!

Taken at The Loft....

A few updates too. We moved into our new space in Schererville this past week. Although we're still unpacking, it already feels like home. I also love being under the same roof with other women-owned businesses. Thanks to all the families that met with me yesterday in our new space. I loved being there and can't wait until it's dressed up to perfection :)

Also, the boys and I adopted a baby girl American Bulldog. (You all know I had to have my girl :) She's so tiny and soft and super cute in every way.

Happy photographer coming to a town near you....

Last week was a complete whirlwind of on-location photoshoots. I went as far south as Valparaiso IN, west towards Bourbonnais, and north to play in Northbrook. Just as varied as the locations were the people I photographed. I must have photographed almost every age group- newborns, toddlers, Seniors, a couple in love, and I'll even count Grandparents (holding newborn twins)! It was an amazing week. Did I mention I spent half of it at The Loft?

Fact is: I love what I do.

I think (I hope, I pray) that we're moving into our new space in Schererville this week. We've been wrapping up on the basics. Special thanks to Al, all the girls (you know who you are) and Musa! I'm psyched to move everything in and get settled. My mind is racing with ideas!

I should add that we have a baby on the way- an American Bulldog baby, and she'll be here this week. We're all so excited (I can't wait I can't wait I can't wait) and I'm sure her photograph will make a blog appearance.

It's all good :)

Ann
